What does your club want from the transfer window? We asked a fan from all 20 Premier League clubs

Transfer targets
Who will get the best deal in the January sales?

As we enter the second half of an exciting Premier League season, Telegraph Sport is launching a new Football Fans Network.

We have brought together supporters from all 20 of the Premier League clubs, who we will be calling on throughout the season to give their views on big issues, contentious moments, and let off some steam about the goings on at their club.

To kick things off we turn our attention to the the January transfer window, asking each fan to tell us how their club's fortunes could be changed in the time before deadline day.

What is needed? What is likely? What's the dream? And who can happily look for a new home?

As ever, we're keen to hear your thoughts - have our fans got it right? Does your club need goals or grit to get them over the line this season? Let us know your predictions for the January transfer window in the comments section below. To comment, simply log in to your account or register, for free, here.

Arsenal

France's Samuel Umtiti hits a ball in front of Germany's Thomas Mueller during the Euro 2016 semifinal soccer match between Germany and France.
Could World Cup winner Samuel Umtiti be the answer to Arsenal's defensive needs? Credit: AP

What we need: A centre-back, or two! A leader in defence who is Virgil Van Dijk-esque and can actually tackle without giving away a foul or penalty. Our biggest problem has always been the defence and Lichtsteiner is not the answer to it.

What we'll get: After seeing the rumours of signing Gary Cahill I can't say that I'm overly confident on us signing a new CB who is either a young prospect or still sharp and can form a partnership with Sokratis. Stan Kroenke is keeping his money close to his chest as per usual, we'd be lucky to get someone of Harry Maguire's standard.

Ideal signing: Samuel Umtiti would be the ideal signing, a great CB with plenty of years left in him. Although he is probably a £60-70m signing, Arsenal surely have the money lying around somewhere with our ticket prices. If we could sell a few players (Ozil, Elneny, etc) that would help to bring in an experienced player.

Who can leave? I would be happy to see Elneny go in the January transfer window, he doesn't offer much to the club other than work ethic. It wouldn't damage the club if he left, it would create some income and remove another squad place for Guendouzi to continue first team football.

Bournemouth

Dominic Solanke was an early addition in the transfer window for Bournemouth Credit: GETTY IMAGES

What we need: A centre-midfield player that is confident on the ball and can score goals. He has to be of international standard. Eddie Howe likes youthful players with ambition who are can play without fear. If they have Premier League experience, then that's all the better. The right-back position and striker positions have been addressed already, so the team is already looking stronger for the second half of the season. Hopefully, Adam Smith will also be back from injury soon.

What we'll get: We have signed striker Dominic Solanke from Liverpool on a long term contract, and right-back Nathaniel Clyne from Liverpool on loan. If Bournemouth sign anyone else it is likely to be a central midfielder or players for the youth teams. Eddie Howe doesn't like the January window, and if the club brings in another player, to make it three players in total, it will have been a massive January window for Bournemouth.

Ideal signing: The rumours are that Bournemouth could be in the market to sign either Joe Allen of Stoke City or, preferably, Ruben Loftus-Cheek from Chelsea. Both are international players and could add experience to the team.

Who can leave? Jermain Defoe has already gone on loan to Rangers. There is no chance that Bournemouth would accept a bid for Callum Wilson or Nathan Aké unless it was silly money. Eddie Howe does not want to sell our best players.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Will Jurgen Locadia's recent run of form be enough to keep him at Brighton this January? Credit: GETTY IMAGES

What we need: For the first transfer window in living memory, there isn't a desperate need for reinforcements. We've got a competitive squad that should keep us up, so in theory we can keep our powder dry and then spend big in the summer. Glenn Murray will be collecting his pension soon so he’s going to need replacing at some point, but unless the right striker becomes available – and let’s face it, if he does then everybody in the league will want him – then I’d expect a very quiet month for Chris Hughton.

What we'll get: We were linked with Dominic Solanke before his Bournemouth move which suggests the club are sniffing around for a striker. There has also been some paper talk about Tunisian international winger Youssef Msakni coming in, prompting the entire population of Tunis to flood the Albion’s social media pages with posts about how good he is. I’d have to question the club’s sanity if they paid big money for a bloke currently plying his trade in the mighty Qatar Stars League.

Ideal signing: Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Pascal Gross has struggled since coming back from injury, so Loftus-Cheek would provide the perfect alternative as he clearly needs first team football. Plus it would wind Palace fans up no end if he turned up at the Amex.

Who can leave? Two weeks ago I’d have driven Jurgen Locadia to wherever he wanted to go myself. He’s hit a bit of form now though. We might need to use the £16m receipt for Alireza Jahanbakhsh, our record signing who’s done very little so far since arriving in the summer.

Burnley

Burnley's English goalkeeper Joe Hart saves a shot from Tottenham Hotspur's Argentinian midfielder Erik Lamela (R) during the English Premier League football match between Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley at Wembley Stadium
Is Joe Hart surplus to requirements now at Burnley?  Credit: AFP

What we need: Aaron Lennon is injured long-term and Robbie Brady is also prone to injury so we need a winger, and ideally a central midfielder too - someone who's a box-to-box guy and can provide a much needed spark in the middle.

What we'll get: The biggest rumours at the moment surround Matt Phillips from West Bromwich Albion and there’s the constant noise from fans who want to see Burnley-born Jay Rodriguez ‘come home’. Having said that, I think we can be more shrewd in the market. In November, we appointed technical director Mike Rigg, with both the manager and the chairman saying he was brought in to recruit which shows signs of them wanting to invest and spend. Rigg had a hand in Manchester City's signing of Sergio Aguero and David Silva so an Aldi budget equivalent would be nice!

Ideal signing: Pablo Hernandez from Leeds or Danny Drinkwater on loan till the end of the season. Nicking Bradley Dack from our nearest and dearest wouldn't be too bad either.

Who can leave? Joe Hart. We can't keep three goalkeepers happy and Tom Heaton and Nick Pope are simply better than him.

Cardiff City

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock reacts during the FA Cup Third Round tie between Gillingham and Cardiff City.
Can Neil Warnock weave some magic in the transfer market for Cardiff this January?  Credit: REUTERS

What we need: A right back, a midfielder and a striker according to our manager – I’d like to see a centre-back as well. A specialist striker capable of staking a serious claim for a place in the team. A genuine right back that can do more than be a sound defender. We have too many central midfielders who are much of a muchness and also a lack of consistency in wide attacking areas.

What we'll get: It’s tempting to say a couple of loans bought in a panic on the final day of the window. That’s what happened in August, but, as it turns out, the two players concerned were probably our best signings of the summer, so maybe more of the same won’t be a bad thing. There are mixed, even contradictory, signals coming out of the club and this is not helped by stories linking us with £20m Argentinian strikers or a League One forward on a Bosman.

We’re supposed to be signing an 18-year-old centre back from Galatasaray for millions and a Celtic reject from Hibs for nothing. My guess is that our spending will remain firmly on the cautious side by the standards of this league and it should be remembered that, having spent something like £35m on six players in 2018, none of them could be called guaranteed starters in Neil Warnock’s current strongest eleven.

Ideal signing: Nathaniel Clyne, out of the players we were linked with going into the window, but that’s not going to happen given his move to Bournemouth. I also like Jarrod Bowen of Hull and Ozon Kabak, who we’ve been linked with, looks like a great prospect. I’d say they are both realistic for a club like us, as is Fernando Llorente, but his Swansea background may annoy some fans.

Who can leave? Has to be striker Gary Madine for me. He cost a reported £6m from Bolton a year ago and he’s still not scored a goal for us. Our manager says he’s not very good at buying strikers, Madine has done nothing to alter that view. Midfielder Loic Damour is going apparently, as are Anthony Pilkington and Lee Tomlin.

Chelsea

Borussia Dortmund's Christian Pulisic celebrates scoring his side's first goal during a Champions League group A soccer match between Club Brugge and Borussia Dortmund at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges
Christian Pulisic joined Chelsea on January 2 only to be loaned back to Dortmund for the remainder of the season Credit: AP

What we need: Chelsea’s biggest concern right now is an obvious lack of goals. Other than Hazard, no one in that squad will get us 20 goals this season. While Morata, Pedro and Willian are often blamed for our lack of firing power, our central midfielders don’t contribute much to the goals department either. The likes of Jorginho, Kante, Kovacic and Barkley are all technically gifted and more often than not do exactly what is asked of them, but you wouldn’t necessarily bet on any of them scoring during a game. Chelsea are in desperate need of a top quality goalscorer.

What we'll get: Having spent almost £60m on Pulisic last week, it remains to be seen how much more the club are willing to invest this transfer window. The big question right now is whether Chelsea manage to offload Morata. Should that be the case, Gonzalo Higuain and Callum Wilson are reportedly the most likely replacements. There has also been a lot of talk in regards to Cagliari and Italy midfielder Nicolo Barella, who some experts are already comparing to Jorginho and Marco Verratti. With Cesc Fabregas on his way to Monaco, bringing in another midfielder might be a smart move from Chelsea.

Ideal signing: Mauro Icardi could be the answer to Chelsea’s striking woes. There has been interest for many years, but nothing ever materialised. With Inter crashing out of the Champions League and the Serie A title virtually out of reach, I think a big money offer could finally see us land the Argentine.

Who can leave? Victor Moses has played 176 minutes of football all season, with Maurizio Sarri publicly stating the player doesn’t fit his style of play. The Nigerian will be fondly remembered for playing an important part in our title-winning campaign under Conte, but his time at Stamford Bridge has come to an end.

Crystal Palace

Victor Moses of Chelsea and Ben Davies of Tottenham Hotspur battle for possession during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea at Wembley Stadium
Could a reunion be on the cards for Victor Moses and Crystal Palace? Credit: GETTY IMAGES

What we need: Crystal Palace have a very high wage bill and there isn’t the cash to splash like other clubs, but I’m obviously hoping for one or two coming in. An obvious problem is lack of goals: we had 31 shots on target against Cardiff over Christmas but no goals. We can be creative but haven’t been clinical in the box. Christian Benteke is only just back and Connor Wickham will need games. Wilfried Zaha isn’t a striker and neither is Andros Townsend: we need someone who can finish off their hard work.

What we'll get: A few rumours floating around as usual. Everton’s Oumar Niasse always pop ups as a target, even after we failed to sign him in August. Victor Moses too - could a Palace reunion be on the cards? Josh Maja from Sunderland and Michy Batshuayi are also names heavily linked with CPFC.

Ideal signing: Batshuayi would add to the team nicely but either way we need a striker. We are a pretty good unit on our day but a decent striker would push us up that table. Ayew may have scored two in two but that doesn’t solve our problems. Benteke is back in training so fingers crossed he’ll be back to his scoring ways in short order.

Who can leave? It was sad to lose Jonny Williams (to Charlton) and Jason Puncheon (To Huddersfield) this week. Finally letting go of Jordan Mutch will hopefully free up funds for a couple of decent additions this window. Alexander Sorloth - a £9m player - needs a loan move away to build confidence. He started against Grimsby and should have scored. He needs time and experience to adapt to the pace of the Premier league.

Everton

Belgium's Michy Batshuayi celebrates scoring their third goal with Thorgan Hazard against Scotland.
Michy Batshuayi is on a number of club's lists this January. Could Everton be the ones to land him?  Credit: REUTERS

What we need: This current Everton squad has bags of talent but simply does not score enough goals. Marco Silva and Marcel Brands need to identify someone who can put the ball in the net - easier said than done. Since Silva's arrival the football has improved and we’re much more attacking, but we are often far too wasteful in the final third. If Silva could solve that then I think Everton can get a lot closer to the top six.

What we'll get: Marcel Brands has already stated that Everton will not sign anybody unless the club manages to sell some players first. Silva has a clear idea what he wants to bring into the club but Brands has been clear they will not overpay for anybody. If Silva does get the go ahead, then I’d jump at the chance to make Andre Gomes’ loan move from Barcelona a permanent one.

Ideal signing: Michy Batshuayi. We’re in desperate need of a centre forward and I still think Batshuayi is a player that has not yet reached his full potential. He’d definitely improve our attack. Everton have also been linked with Abdoulaye Doucoure from Watford - he’d be a fantastic addition, even if he’s not a striker. The question is: can we persuade Watford to sell him?

Who can leave? Morgan Schneiderlin. It just has not worked out for Morgan since we signed him two years ago from Manchester United despite a positive start to his Everton career. He is a big earner in the squad and is not involved so it makes sense to move him on.

Fulham

Chelsea's English defender Gary Cahill heads the ball during the English League Cup football match between Chelsea and Derby County
Fulham may look to Chelsea's Gary Cahill to shore up their defence Credit: AFP

What we need: The back four seems to be the biggest problem at the moment. It’s always been a problem of ours, and looking back at the summer transfer window, it’s definitely an area that we should have addressed better. With that being said, we haven’t been scoring many goals as of late and that’s also a concern. Aleksandar Mitrovic was a crucial part of the squad that got us up last season, and with Slavisa Jokanovic now gone, it does make you wonder whether he’s still happy here.

What we'll get: Fulham are always full of surprises, so it's hard to predict. Given that we cannot sign anyone else on loan, it puts much more pressure on the chairman to splash the cash. However, with Claudio Ranieri’s experience in football and all over Europe, I hope for some experienced players that can really give the squad what it needs. There are a lot of rumours regarding Gary Cahill, Danny Drinkwater, Danny Simpson and Victor Moses.

Ideal signing: It's crucial for me that we bring in another centre-back. I would love to see Cahill in our back four, as he brings a lot of experience (something this squad lacks). I’d also like to see us go in for Moses. He too has a lot of experience at both ends of the table in this league and could play in defence and midfield, giving this side much more pace.

Who can leave? A player that I would happily say goodbye to would be Timothy Fosu-Mensah. Technically not good enough for this league and lucky to be on United’s books. Another player from a big club who has looked very disappointing.

Huddersfield Town

Jordan Rhodes
Could Jordan Rhodes be the man to save Huddersfield's season?  Credit: GETTY IMAGES

What we need: I could fill page upon page answering this. The real question is 'what don’t we need?'. We have struggled for goals for the better part of 18 months, so it’s clear that we need someone with a cutting edge at the business end of the pitch.

What we'll get: Chairman Dean Hoyle issued a rallying call on New Year’s Eve in which he claimed we would not “sleepwalk” into relegation. With that he promised investment, but I’d expect that in the form of players suited for next season in the Championship.

Ideal signing: Jordan Rhodes, he’s a budget version of Gary Lineker – not a scorer of great goals, but a great scorer of goals. He found the net 73 times in 3 years at Town before and he’d be far more effective than Steve Mounie or Laurent Depoitre up top.

Who can leave? Alex Pritchard. He was brought in last January to add creativity to the squad and quite frankly he hasn’t delivered. He’s too small, too weak, technically limited and on far too much money - a rumoured £100,000 a week.

Leicester City

Watford's Troy Deeney celebrates scoring their first goal against West Ham
Could Troy Deeney bring the goals along with him in a move to Leicester City?  Credit: REUTERS

What we need: GOALS! Yes we have Jamie Vardy but we have nobody to assist him or replace him either in-game if we need a goal, or if he is injured [which he has been]. We really need what we would call a “plan B” striker, a big alternative, both physically and mentally different to Vards.

What we'll get: Claude Puel is keeping a lid on it, he is suggesting we will do “little business” in January. To be honest, sitting seventh in the table, perhaps the owners and manager are more than pleased, and fighting the fans' urge to go and spend their money in this window.

Ideal signing: Troy Deeney. He knows the Premier League, most Leicester fans rate him highly, he is strong, powerful and got an eye for goal and for some reason seems on the fringes of the Watford starting 11. We would love to get him in, and he would fit in with our style of play, and perhaps have better results than Vardy is.

Who can leave? Adrien Silva, famously signed 14 seconds after the transfer deadline, and with much promise, has been a real flop in the 12 months he has actually been allowed to play for us. Shame, but time for him to move on… 14 seconds early this time!?

Liverpool

Leipzig's Timo Werner (L) is challenged by Dorfmerkingen's Felix Gruber during the German DFB Cup 1st round match
Could Liverpool bring in the much sought after Timo Werner before the window closes? Credit: EPA

What we need: A good young striker. After the Manchester City loss, our biggest problem could be how we recover from this mentally. This is something we’re going to have to see in the next match, to see if all the boys can bounce back from the defeat. Overall though, we don’t have any big problems, and I think it’s hard to when you’re top of the league by four points!

What we'll get: The club have kept very silent when it comes to incomings. With Clyne leaving on loan, we could try and find a short term solution as a back up for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool have been linked with Timo Werner, however I can’t see his happening in January. We’re reportedly closing in on Turkish wonder kid Abdulkadir Omur. But from what I’ve heard, we won’t be signing anyone big this January.

Ideal signing: Timo Werner: a brilliant, young, talented striker playing in the Bundesliga right now. He’s already scored eleven goals in the league this season, and he’s only 22. In his first season with Leipzig, he scored a total of 21 goals. Liverpool won’t have a better chance to sign him, with the CEO of Leipzig claiming that Werner will leave in the summer.

Who can leave? Easy. Dejan Lovren. The man makes constant mistakes, but luckily this season he has been saved by Virgil van Dijk plenty of times. I love the lad’s passion, but when you’re playing at this elite level, you can’t let mistakes get the better of you.

Manchester City

Manchester City's Ukrainian midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko looks on during a press conference of Manchester City at the Metallist stadium in Kharkiv
Is Zinchenko's time up at Manchester City?  Credit: AFP

What we need: Fernandinho is an absolute machine, but he's 33. He seems to get better every month, but we simply don't have a viable alternative to him. We need a player who can step into his shoes and show that same tenacity and defensive solidity that he brings us, just to allow him a rest really. We're not expecting the incoming player to be up to his levels immediately, but a diamond in the rough with understudy potential would be more than enough.

What we'll get: Honestly, I don't think we'll sign anyone. If it was to be anyone, it'd be a left-back given Benjamin Mendy's injuries, Oleksandr Zinchenko's awkwardness in the position, and Fabian Delph starting to look frequently uncomfortable there, but I still don't think it'll happen. Pep is insistent, the club are too, and given the noise around FFP at the moment, I expect we'll try and 'make do' with the squad that we have until the summer.

Ideal signing: Despite the left-back troubles, I still want a Fernandinho alternative. Lyon's Tanguy Ndombele is fantastic. Technically excellent, tenacious, powerful and he's shone in both games against us in the Champions League this year. He'd be a brilliant understudy.

Who can leave? I'm content with the squad and don't want anyone to leave really, but if someone had to go it'd probably be Zinchenko. Lovely lad, good footballer, but never in a million years a left-back. Having said that, I'd prefer he stays as we need the depth.

Manchester United

Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld gestures during the Carabao Cup Quarter-Final against Arsenal
Toby Alderweireld has been a long-term target for Manchester United Credit: ACTION IMAGES

What we need: A leader! We’re struggling defensively, Jose Mourinho tried to restrict us going forward to protect the back line, whereas Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to attack first and play to that strength. It’s highlighting the need for a top class defender. Or we will be found out.

What we'll get: Probably no-one! Ole has mentioned about the club having targets that he can give his opinion on. But I just feel it’ll likely be no-one.

Ideal signing: I think Tony Alderweireld for the knock down price of £25m would be ideal. It’s really all we need!

Who can leave? Antonio Valencia. He’s finished. He’s a complete passenger in both attack and defence.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United's English owner Mike Ashley before the English Premier League football match between Southampton and Newcastle United at St Mary's Stadium in Southampton
Will Mike Ashley dust off the cheque book in the January window?  Credit: AFP

What we need: With the exception of the goalkeeper, and a centre-back, (where we have 5/6 Premier League-level options) I would say every position. That may sound drastic but this is a squad that has been depleted every season over the course of six years. Without Salomon Rondon upfront, there is next to nothing going forward for Newcastle. Little is offered from either flank or at no.10. Meanwhile, Jonjo Shelvey has continually shown that you would be naïve to rely on him. Paul Dummett and Deandre Yedlin have been brilliant at full-back but we miss them when one is unavailable and that is saying something.

What we'll get: The same as most January transfer windows, which is absolutely nothing. Newcastle United haven’t bought a single player in four of the last five January windows. We have spent less than £10m in nine of 11 January windows under Mike Ashley. On average, under Ashley, we tend to make a profit in January. If we are really, really lucky this year then he might just treat us to a loan signing (see the likes of Luuk de Jong, Seydou Doumbia or Islam Slimani in recent years).

Ideal signing: A dream signing would be anyone who breaks the transfer record (literally anyone). Miguel Almiron has mentioned from Atlanta. However, that is not going to happen is it? So yes, realistically, could we get Dwight Gayle back from his loan at West Brom? Call me a dreamer but probably not.

Who can leave? The two indispensables are Martin Dubravka and Rondon. Could we get £30m+ for Lascelles? Do we need five centre-halves? We could afford to let Ciaran Clark go. I am 100% certain that if you asked Rafa Benitez then he would tell you there isn’t one player we can afford to let go, and I am of the same opinion.

Southampton

Southampton could look to the Bundesliga and Leipzig's Yussuf Poulsen to strengthen their attacking options Credit: AP

What we need: Southampton are in desperate need of more pace. Nathan Redmond has often been the team’s only real outlet on the break this season and as a consequence of this, several counter-attacking moves have broken down. Another striker wouldn’t go amiss, either. Danny Ings has been in good form but his fitness remains a concern. Manolo Gabbiadini is on his way out of the club and Charlie Austin and Shane Long have failed to convince for some time now.

What we'll get: Ralph Hasenhuttl is keen to add more athleticism and dynamism to the ranks this month, so it seems likely that wide players and attackers will be chiefly targeted. Norway right wing-back Omar Elabdellaoui has been linked with a move to Southampton and could provide the team with another option on the flanks. Meanwhile, Japan international Shoya Nakajima has reportedly been scouted by the club in recent times.

Ideal signing: Southampton need more attacking quality and RB Leipzig striker Yussuf Poulsen would significantly strengthen the team. The 24-year-old is versatile, powerful in his running and selfless. He’d be an ambitious signing from the club and one that would clearly improve the options at Hasenhuttl’s disposal.

Who can leave? One player who has overstayed his welcome at St Mary’s is Wesley Hoedt. He has been nothing short of calamitous since his £15 million move from Lazio in 2017 and is arguably the worst of Southampton’s five senior centre-backs. It is time for the Netherlands international to seek pastures new.

Tottenham Hotspur

David Brooks of AFC Bournemouth celebrates after he scores his sides first goal during the Premier League match between AFC Bournemouth and Crystal Palace
Bournemouth's starlet David Brooks is coveted by Spurs fans Credit: GETTY IMAGES

What we need: While it’s difficult to pick holes in the Spurs first eleven, our midfield is probably the most in need of strengthening. Imagine it like the body of Tyson Fury – it shouldn’t serve him as well as it does given the look of it, but it does a job - that said, if he worked harder to get it to shape more what more he could be come. Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko have been excellent, but with Moussa Dembele either on his way out or injured and Eric Dier’s form mercurial, we need depth.

What we'll get: We’ll get what we always get… nothing. Only Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino know why we didn’t sign anyone in the summer, but you have to trust them both. They’ve both taken the club so far, and in recent weeks Spurs have been playing some of the best football I’ve witnessed at the club. The stadium is a huge financial burden at this stage, especially given that it’s overrun, but eventually we have to start strengthening. We can get away with it for this January if the form this season is anything to go by. Is that enough though, to simply get by?

Ideal signing: We’re not going to spend £80m+ on Lyon’s Ndombele, especially given Manchester City are in for him, so I’d plump for David Brooks of Bournemouth. His performances in the Premier League this season have been massively impressive since joining from Sheffield United. It would have to be an agreement for a summer move though, due to Premier League rules against a player playing for more than one club in a season.

Who can leave? Vincent Janssen, Georges-Kévin N'Koudou and Dembele. The former two are so far beneath the quality we need, and with Dembele linked with a move to China there is money to be made there.

Watford

Valencia forward Michy Batshuayi, left, duels for the ball with Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen, right , during the Spanish La Liga soccer match between Valencia and Barcelona
Could Barcelona's Thomas Vermaelen be brought in to sure up Watford's defence?  Credit: AP

What we need: We could be stronger at centre-back; Craig Cathcart is tremendous as is Christian Kabasele sometimes, but Younes Kaboul has departed, Sebastian Prödl needs to be a regular starter to be useful and young summer signing Ben Wilmot seems destined for the midfield. Cover is thin, and we could do with a powerful leader at the back.

Elsewhere it’s really up front; our forwards all give us things but a reliable source of goals isn’t a box ticked by anyone. Fortunately, nobody else is looking for a 20-goal-a-season striker so that one should be easy! On the plus side, our midfield options are extraordinary.

What we'll get: Much as Javi Graca professes to be happy with his squad it would be rather unlike us to go through a window without some incoming activity. Gary Cahill and Thomas Vermaelen (again) are perhaps the highest profile names on the mooted centre-back list, but such a signing is as likely to be someone we’ve never heard of from distant shores and no worse for it. We’ve got used to this. The big caveat is the future of the coveted Abdoulaye Doucouré; it’s possible that we’ll anticipate his departure with a signing in midfield though the club have been quite clear that he’s unlikely to move on in January.

Ideal signing: I’m past the stage of second guessing and will be very happy with whoever is top of our list – the club are much better at this than me. Having said which, in recruiting Tom Cleverley and Ben Foster to great success in recent years we’re doing a good job of bringing back former Players of the Season (seven now on the books). Does anyone have Tommy Mooney’s number?

Who can leave? We have a very large squad and an extraordinary number of promising young players who won’t get game time. The likes of Pontus Dahlberg and Michael Folivi could perhaps do with an active loan spell.

West Ham United

Andy Carroll of West Ham United celebrates with Robert Snodgrass after scoring his team's second goal during the FA Cup Third Round match between West Ham United and Birmingham City
Andy Carroll's days at West Ham could be numbered Credit: GETTY IMAGES

What we need: Despite spending heavily in the summer, due to the amount of injuries the main issues West Ham needed to address are still prevalent within the squad now. The key area is in the centre of midfield with both Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble not offering enough on a regular basis to push the club forward (one just replaces the other every few games) and Jack Wilshere is, surprisingly, injured a lot of the time. A strong dynamic and technically proficient midfielder is required to go alongside the outstanding Declan Rice.

What we'll get: January is notoriously a bad time to sign players that you need as no one is going to sell you a quality player unless you pay an exorbitant fee. West Ham have already brought in free agent Samir Nasri and I would think only a loan or short term deal for someone will be secured. If the club manage to offload one or two players then perhaps a punt will be taken on a promising Championship player.

Ideal signing: A raid on Leicester City! Wilfred Ndidi is the type of player i'd love to see in our midfield as well as Ben Chilwell as I am unconvinced with the left back situation at West Ham. Loftus-Cheek is another I think could flourish if the chance came about.

Who can leave? Andy Carroll, but I have been saying this for so long it’s akin to saying "when I win the lottery". He has returned from injury again and looks painfully unfit and if he is the replacement for Marko Arnautovic then that has to be a concern.

What we need: A goalscorer who can play in one of the positions across the front three. We have many useful players in this area but someone who can put the ball in the net with greater regularity would improve the team. Other than that perhaps a centre back and cover/competition for Matt Doherty at right wingback.

What we'll get: We've already been heavily linked with Tammy Abraham and he might be the answer to our goal scoring problems. I can see that one happening. I've also read tentative stories about Lazio's Brazilian defender Wallace, which makes sense with his connections to Jorge Mendes.

Ideal signing: I'm always looking at Gestifute clients as it's the agency that represent many of our players and Radamel Falcao wouldn't be a bad shout on a short term deal. He can finish so I wouldn't mind seeing him in old gold for a few months.

Who can leave?: Leo Bonatini hasn't seen much action this season so he could make way if another forward enters the picture. Defender Kortney Hause is also heading for the exit.
