Sunderland still casting the eye over young Chelsea trialist

According to Chronicle Live, League One side Sunderland are still casting the eye over Chelsea youngster Ruben Sammut.

Chelsea youngster Ruben Sammut is still on trial with League One side Sunderland, it has been reported. The 21-year-old will play in “at least one more game” for the club’s Under-23s side before Sunderland decide if they want to sign him or not.

Sammut is out of contract at the end of the current season and could be available on a free transfer. With that in mind, Sunderland have been casting their over him ahead of a possible move to the Stadium of Light.

He played in a 3-1 defeat to Stoke City’s second string side and is set to be involved again when they play against Aston Villa.

He first joined Chelsea back in 2004, aged just seven years old. In 14 years in the academy at Stamford Bridge, he made his way through the youth ranks, making his way into the Under-18s. The English born midfielder has played for Chelsea’s Under-18s on 11 occasions, before making his way into the Under-23s side, where he has played most of his football.

Sammut has featured 49 times for the club’s Under-23s and has experienced his first taste of professional football this season on loan with Falkirk. The 21-year-old – who can also play in defence – has played for the Scottish side 16 times.

Sammut can play anywhere in the midfield, including out wide or in a defensive role, he can also fill in along the back four if needs be (Transfermarkt).
